I find myself recovering lost emotions aqnd sensations from my childhood. As a kid, I used to spend a lot of time in the Brukenthal Museum (Sibiu, Romania), where my father used to work. Every day, after classes, I used to go there and wait till he was ready to leave home with me. I have spent so many hours between those art collections, and I remember very specific paintings-related emotions. I was really enjoying to imagine stories behind the paintings that impressed me. Most of them were late renaissance and dutch baroque, some were scaring me through their dark atmosphere, anyway, I was getting a lot of strange emotion between the works there… I have tried to put together some of those obscure feelings in my latest work as well… Do you get more inspiration out of traditional art then out of pop art? Yes, and it’s probably because I am more familiar to this medium… Is that maybe another way of beeing “retro chic” – relating with elements that were “in” 300 years ago instead of 30 years ago? Maybe, why not?... What is the music that inspires you? Besides classical.. It think there’s a lot of musical beauty in the sixties, from The Velvet Underground and the Electric Prunes to Love and Os Mutantes... I also dig the acid grooves in music libraries and soundtracks by Peter Thomas, Ennio Morricone, Eddie Warner, Piero Umiliani and the others..Lately, I find myself listening to a lot of modern electronics… Im quite sure that most of the electro – punkfunk -whatsoever movement nowadays is just a bunch of trendy ignorants, but some of the musical productions actually sound nice.. Oh, and also, I really like Bjork… What do you dislike at most in the fashion industry today? People who wear t-shirts of bands they haven’t heard of. That’s where the whole evil starts. What is your latest work all about? I finally managed to finish my collection “Jardin des Delices” – paraphrase of a famous triptique by Hieronymus Bosch. While the painters work was carrying an obvious moralising message, typical in the baroque era, by blaming the hedonistic tendencies in his society, I am trying to focus more on the esthetic side of pleasure. Des gens qui essaient d'être des stars il y en a plein mais j'ai pas l¹impression que dans la mode il y en a tant que ça. Il y a beaucoup de vernis mais quand tu grattes tout ça… En tout cas j e n'en suis pas une ça c'est sur. La musique qui symbolise votre prochaine collection ? Le groupe Pizzicato Five. En mode ou en musique, qu'y a-t-il après le recyclage et la post-modernité ? En ce moment il y a surtout rien du tout, on se pose tous la question mais personne n'arrive à faire quelque chose de nouveau. Dans la mode c'est fini les tendances précises, maintenant il y a de tout pour tout le monde, et c'est très bien comme ça. Dans la musique je n'ai pas l'impression que depuis le mouvement techno, il y ait quelque chose de vraiment nouveau… On pourrait parler de Vive La fête et tous ces trucs là, même si je les aime beaucoup je préfère me replonger dans mes vieux disques de Siouxsie & the Banshees… Un groupe mal habillé peut-il faire de la bonne musique (exemple ?) Bien sur et encore heureux car qu'est ce qu'on se ferait chier si il y avait que des gens bien habillés qui font de la bonne musique. Une musique pour gâcher votre défilé ? Police, je déteste. Le pire look de l'histoire de la musique, le meilleur ? Pour le pire, Je pense à un truc très nouveau c'est les What for ce nouveau groupe de M6, la styliste elle les a pas loupé, le trip manteau en fausse fourrure argent pour les mecs mélangé a des looks bien noir, ça me fait vomir. Le meilleur, c'est celui de Carmen Miranda, il y a un petit musée qui lui est consacrée a Rio de Janeiro ou j'ai vu ses looks, c'était hallucinant, du vrai spectacle. Quel groupe ou morceau représente le mieux le style d'aujourd'hui ? Unfinished Sympathy de massive Attack restera gravé a jamais dans ma mémoire, est ce qu'il est le plus représentatif d'aujourd'hui je sais pas : difficile de ne donner qu'un titre… Quelle rockstar aurait vraiment besoin de se rhabiller ? Je sais pas leur nom mais j'ai vu a la télé un clip d'un groupe habillé tout en vinyle noir genre un peu SM chic c'était tellement ringard. Well, I don’t really listen to music actually. I’d rather watch MTV or have the radio turned on. Also, I can’t work and listen to music at the same time, it gets on my nerves and I need to concentrate to work properly, I like better the sounds made by sewing machines! What about music in the context of your fashion shows then? Music in my shows is only here to help the story go on. What attracts you more in a band, their music, their look? Definitely the look, not the music. Also, popstars are inspired by each other and it’s a never ending story of copying each other, and this happens in the fashion industry as well. Music and looks are copied and it becomes just a thing you can consume quickly and easily. It seems enough for people to feel fulfilled with that these days. It has become a question of consumption. That is so true. But how do you do when you want to listen to a specific singer? I love some bands and singers of course, but I just don’t buy their records. I like the work itself, to listen to it, not buying a record. Indeed, just like fashion, the record industry is a very tough business, I like something more independent. What do you think of the fact that image is so important in music? As I told you, I watch MTV sometimes, and it is so teen oriented, with an imagery very much linked to the music. A good example of that is the fans, who want to look like their idols, since, say, the Beatles. They were the first real pop band, and it shows that pop is a phenomenon. You say you like independent music and you watch MTV. It could sound contradictory? I like things that are good and bad. I think what is interesting is the balance of that, putting things in perspective. Music is also dancing: do you enjoy going out in clubs for instance? Yes! I love dancing a lot. I can dance on any music, good or bad, it just has to be fun. Music has to be fun. It can be any style as well. I love to come back home after having been dancing all night long. Again, what is strange, is that there can be crappy and good music altogether, but people seem to go for the crappy kind... Do you mean it is like mainstream versus underground? Not really. In fashion for instance, there is not really an underground, it is just what can be called people who do things by themselves. In music, the record companies are very powerful, and, just like for fashion, it is a business, the point in the end is to sell. If you do a show just to be crazy, it is pointless. But it is true that in fashion it is more a question of product than in music: you could be singing in the street and that is already making music, with no product that is. How do you think this is going to evolve? Well, I am not somebody to do predictions. I think that maybe fashion is more luxury-oriented than music, but we could as well live without clothes. The new release from LFO, and anything from CROSS records. Do you have idols or somebody you really like in the music industry, whether in his/her music per se or his/her imagery? Annie Lennox and Madonna. The way their creations is past obssession towards youth, but it's about their life and what they are now. Image is a big part of music. As a designer, do you build an image for yourself or do you concentrate only on the collection? Dressing ourselves and designing the collection are both the result of living a life. It is a reaction towards what we experience. How does the music that surrounds you affect your collections? Can it be the start of an idea or do you work from different sources? Music is a vital ingredient to create an ambiance which will affect the creating process, but not a direct source of inspiration though. Just like in a movie, the music of a show is a very important part of what people understand about it. How do you set it up? We work with a unit called "the grid". We send them words and they answer with music. The music industry seems to have less inspiration than before and recycles all the time old beats and rhymes. Do you think this is happening in fashion as well, with all the 80's revival, the return of rock n'roll, etc? In the mainstream world, yes. Fashion, by its nature, is a changing thing. On the other hand, style is something that stays and is linked to one's sensibility. Do you prefer to follow, as a person, or create, as a professionnal, a trend or to go your own way, even against people's opinion? Trend has nothing to do with our creations. People like Yohji Yamamoto or Hussein Chalayan play their own music. Is it something you'd like to do as well? We would be more interested in collaborating with people who live in music, fed by music, just like we do in fashion. A good collaboration creates 1+1= ?, something always surprising but interesting. Have you ever dressed some music stars, or would you like to? We have done some costumes for music videos and stage performances. We made a dress covered in mirrors for Moloko, it was a task but looked beautiful in the video. Fashion and music being like the phenix , how do you see their future? I've been designing since my high school days when i took a few clothing construction classes that were offered. i started out making clothes out of tyvek paper, coloring them and embroidering on because hussein chayalans collection at the time sparked something in me, how he was bringing art to fashion. It wasnt until much later that i actually started working with more natural fibers and traditional shapes. How did you made out your first collection? My first collection i made in 2000 was just a burst of sporadic energy and built up ideas that had been floating around in my mind/imagination for a while, i hadnt used a sewing machine in months and i must have made well over 100 unique pieces that first summer of designing/sewing. It was alot of bleach and tea dyed fabrications, cap sleeves and hand sewn sequins, it had a neo punk feel to it. Where does your inspiration come from? Downtown la, nippon, the homeless, the color swatch paint department at home depot, listening to music on the bus, thrift stores, fast food, 7-11, life What influence do you think Los Angeles, your city, has on your creativity (Tell us about your life in that huge city) ? The weather really affects our moods and growing up i used to hate the sunshine probably because i sunburn easily being a redhead. ive grown to appreciate it more now.i think los angeles has a very light and airy influence on my collections and how i design, i hardly deal with heavy pieces like coats and such, i love wearing tanktops personally and los angeles' sunny weather almost year round allows this to be part of my uniform. im a big fan of showing skin. For your fall/winter collection, you mixed sporty materials and military details in a sexy way… It could be quite related to dance show, how dance or body language is important in your life or work? I actually really love dancing but its not something i get to do that often anymore. sometimes i daydream of choreographed dance segments while i have my headphones on. it would be great to see dancers in those fringe pieces from fall shimmying around on stage. You dressed a lot of celebrities, especially music personalities, would you like to collaborate directly with some artists, Create special collections for music shows for example? For whom would you like to? There are some artists that i really admire like jake and dinos chapman, their work is so amazing and perverse. and also stephen hendee. genius.as far as musicians i would like to design clothing for those artists whom i listen to alot even tho my style wouldnt really fit into what they normally wear like mariah carey. id actually love to cover her up a bit more! id also love to style allison goldfrapp, she has a great image. im planning to style my friends band 'dangerous muse' for their upcoming shows, they just got signed to warner bros. some celebs id like to dress: lindsay lohan, chloe sevigny, the olsens and michelle trachenberg just because her last name is so similar to mine. haha. Your work reminds the best of the eighties crazy disco years, do you cherish some icons from this period? i was a child of the eighties so to me i just think of my childhood icons that were cartoon characters and fantasy adventure movies i loved to watch like he man and goonies to the dark crystal and the ewoks from return of the jedi. What do you like from this period (Freedom, craziness, drama…) ? Watching VH1 classics during flights really makes me wish i had cable in the 80s...the outfits were amazing and the videos were so great and low budget Do you remind some music icons from any period that inspired you sympathy (or horror?) or some clothing? I'm a fan of things being so gross they are good, like shoulder pads for men. If you were a costume collector, what would be your masterpiece (Elvis jacket, Grace Jones hood…) ? All the Vivienne Westwood Sex graphic t shirts from the late 70s, i love them. Which piece from your own collection would you include in this museum? Probably this black sequined chested patchwork dress i made a few years back, it was very time consuming but well worth it. What is your next collection about, how do you see the next summer mood? I'm feeling outer space for the next collection, how it ends up is another thing, but next summer is too soon to tell but i def will make it more about what i want to wear that will translate for both men and women. Non, ma mère était passionnée de lyrique et donc j'ai fait quelques mois de violon, mais ça s'est arrêté là... Mon père, de son côté, m'a fait vite partager son goût pour ma musique soul et funk comme Stevie Wonder. Mon oncle, âgé à peine de quelques années de plus que moi, m'a fait découvrir également assez tôt toute une facette de musique disco black, de Donna Summer à Chic, qui m' a beaucoup marquée... Des personnes assez pointues, qui m'ont transmis un goût érudit pour ce type de musique. Quelle a été ta première révélation musicale à partir de ce moment? On m'a offert Purple Rain de Prince en 1984, mais je crois que j'étais trop jeune pour apprécier pleinement le génie de Prince. Ce n'est que deux ans après que j'ai plongé dans son univers. Entre ses concerts, les affiches d'Under the Cherry Moon à la Cotton Club dans les rues de Paris, le clip de Kiss, j'ai craqué... De grandes émotions donc? Oui, plutôt,... on pourrait presque parler de premiers émois sexuels! Sans pour autant être une fan hardcore à se battre pour une bout de chemise ( quoique j'ai réussi à récupérer une baguette de son batteur, lancée dans la fosse pendant un de ces concerts), je l'ai toujours suivi avec grand intérêt, entre les concerts, les batailles effrénées pour les aftershows privés, des Bains Douches au Bataclan, même les conventions de disques pour trouver les raretés musicales dont il peut faire preuve ! De même, sa généalogie a été extrêmement inspirante : toutes ces filles stylées et super douées avec lesquelles il a collaboré par la suite, comme Sheila E. ou Vanity 6, restent pour moi très exceptionnelles sur tous les plans. En général, quelle a été la musique qui t' accompagnée pendant ton adolescence? Assez rapidement, la transition s'est faite sur le rap et le hip hop, des Jungle Brothers, A Tribe called Quest ( c'était les débuts de Nova, et oui...), les bandes de graffeurs... Et Prince dans tout ça? Je ne pourrais jamais dire du mal de lui, même après toutes ces années! Les fringues avaient forcément un aspect important ? C'était bien sûr très important...j'allais à Londres pour parfaire le look, chercher des baskets que les autres n'avaient pas à Paris, comme des Fila bleu électriques... La recherche, que ce soit pour tes collections, ou pour la musique, est un aspect dominant de ta personnalité, on dirait... J'ai toujours porté beaucoup d'importance aux sources... je continue à acheter pas mal de vinyls, que ce soit de Cameo ou de Zapp, qui sont encore aujourd'hui de grandes références, pour le hip hop ou l'électro. Aujourd'hui, es- tu toujours aussi passionnée par la musique? Bien sûr ! malheureusement, j'ai moins de temps à consacrer aux explorations musicales, mais de nouvelles rencontres comme Olivier de Fade, à Berçot, m'ont fait apprécier d'autres directions, plus " middle of road" comme Fleetwood Mac ou Alan Parson's project... Assez en avance quand on pense au succès des Scissor Sisters... Apparemment éloignés des Parliament, Clinton, etc.. que j'avais l'habitude d'écouter mais pas moins digne d'intérêt ! Les groupes ou chanteurs te sont-ils source d'inspiration ces temps-ci? Difficilement. A part quelques très rares exceptions, comme Outkast que je suis déjà depuis plusieurs années et qui a bien mérité son succès grâce à son originalité, qu'elle soit musicale ou de style, le pré-formatage actuel laisse peu de place à l'imagination. Nos rock stars semblent bien fades et peu originales. L'underground n'existe plus vraiment désormais, je serais bien en peine de devoir choisir quelqu'un à habiller si j'en avais l'occasion ! Si vous aviez à vous rapprocher d'un mouvement ou d'un style, lequel serait-ce? Nous nous sentons plus proches de quelqu'un comme Michel Gaubert, dont nous aimons beaucoup les tracklists, surtout les premières. Le concept de boutique développé par Frédéric Sanchez et Frédéric Bladou était aussi intéressant, comme l'exposition sur les Disques du Crépuscule, label culte des anées 80, qui éditait, entre autres Tuxedo Moon. Nous achetions énormément leurs disques, nous aimions le côté pop qui rencontrait un aspect plus expérimental. Nous avions l'habitude d'organiser des interviews juste pour rencontrer ces gens-là! Français d'origine, la musique est la raison qui nous a fait venir à Bruxelles. Nous aimions aussi le label Cramed Disques, qui éditait des groupes comme Minimal Compact. En fait, nous avons une culture très 80's. Un autre label belge qui nous plaisait beaucoup est Play It Against Sam (PIAS). Vous créez à deux, un peu comme un groupe de musique comprend plusieurs membres. Comment fonctionnez-vous? Chacun de nous amène des éléments disparates, puis nous fonctionnons à l'envie, à l'instinct. Nous structurons tout cela par la suite. Parfois, ce sont des gens extérieurs qui apportent leur grain de sable. Nous sommes ouverts aux collaborations, comme avec Guillaume Le Touze par exemple, édité chez Actes Sud. Son projet mélangeait son et image, nous avons participé en lui envoyant des polaroïds de sept personnes qui se préparaient avant de sortir en boîte, et l'écrivain a imaginé l'après-midi avant leur sortie. Quels sont les chanteurs ou groupes que vous admirez? Nous aimons bien le groupe " !!! ", avec leur maxi "Out Hud" ou leur album "Street Dad". Tiga aussi, qui nous considèrons comme le meilleur DJ en ce moment. Nous aimons beaucoup Coil, groupe de musique industrielle des années 80, dont les pochettes sont magnifiques. Ils ont un côté mythique qui nous intéresse beaucoup.Sinon, des groupes comme Cabaret Voltaire, Tuxedo Moon, ou encore le dernier Dot Alison, "We are science". Les Detroit Grand Pubahs sont parmi ceux que nous écoutons beaucoup dernièrement. Leur image vous inspire t-elle pour créer? Pas directement. Les chansons de Nick Drake par exemple peuvent nous inspirer, mais il ne s'agit jamais du look ou de l'image. Il s'agit plus d'une question d'atmosphère, une certaine pureté. Que pensez-vous de l'influence que peuvent exercer aujourd'hui les créateurs de mode sur la musique? (groupes préstylés, starlettes insipides...) La mode se sert des artistes et inversement, mais nous n'avons pas d'exemple intéressant, à part Chicks On Speed. Des personnes comme Britney Spears sont de purs produits marketing, sans intention artistique. Tout cela ne produit finalement que des clichés. Vous faîtes souvent des vêtements à l'allure décontractée mais sophistiquée, qui font qu'il faut parfois y regarder de plus près pour bien en comprendre la construction. Aimez-vous que la musique ait la même subtilité ou préférez-vous des morceaux plus "choc"? Cela varie entre ces deux aspects. Une musique un peu populaire ou plus concrète, comme celle de Pan(a)sonic par exemple, peut nous toucher. Nous sommes guidés par l'émotion ou la curiosité, voire une prise de position. Nous pouvons écouter Henri Salvador en passant par Daft Punk, dont nous considèrons le premier album comme une révolution dans la musique populaire. Il est vrai que nous sommes moins proches du goût français en général en matière de musique, et nous nous sommes éloignés de ces groupes ou chanteurs. Vive la fête a collaboré avec Chanel. Nous voulions d'ailleurs faire une série de t-shirts appelée Fanclub, hors du calendrier de la mode, afin de proposer aux groupes que nous aimons une pièce spécialement réalisée pour eux. Enfin, croyez-vous que la mode suivra le même parcours que la musique qui tend à la fois à se segmenter et à s'universaliser? Il est vrai que c'est la tendance générale. L'effet bulldozer des groupes de luxe laisse aux jeunes créateurs une place plus réduite. Il faut faire preuve de beaucoup de créativité pour survivre, mais nous prenons justement cela comme une source de créativité. Nous ne sommes plus dans les années 80 où un vrai créateur pouvait être le roi et il faut faire aujourd'hui face à de sérieux problèmes économiques. Ce qui est dommage, c'est que les groupes de luxe ne donnent rien en échange aux créateurs: ils pourraient construire de nouvelles marques par exemple, au lieu de chercher à engager à tout prix de nouveaux stylistes dans leurs maisons. Différentes musiques m'accompagnent depuis toujours, pour différentes raisons. Mon premier choix délibéré fut Grease. Enfant, j'ai acheté mes premiers vinyls en Allemagne: Nina Hagen, Kraftwerk, Steve Strange...J'écoute des musiques pour l'émotion qu'elles contiennent. Cela peut aussi bien être Kate Bush, Mary Wilson, The Smiths que Blondie ou Grace Jones. Je m'en sers en temps voulu, entre autres bases de travail. Vous définissez vos créations comme cute & girly, quel artiste aurait selon vous la même fraîcheur ? Des artistes avec qui j'ai déjà collaboré: Xavier Veillant, Emmanuelle Mafille et plus récemment Neil farber, un jeune artiste canadien qui a réalisé des imprimés pour certaines pièces de ma collection printemps-été 2004. Comment choisissez-vous la bande-son pour vos présentations ? Une collection raconte une histoire. Il me faut donc créer une ambiance qui lui est relative: je peux aussi bien collaborer avec un DJ que faire appel à un illustrateur sonore selon la nature de la présentation. Pour le printemps-été 2004, j'ai demandé à Matthieu Baillot de créer une ambiance de backstage, évoquant l'univers la scène au sens large, où l'on sent grandir une certaine tension dramatique mais où le dénouement n'arrive jamais. J'aime le côté schizophrène de telles compilations: c'est un patchwork de différentes personnalités. Que pensez-vous de l'influence réciproque mode/musique ? Je pense surtout qu'il y a des images liées à la musique, mais je ne les utilise pas forcément dans mon travail. Souhaiteriez-vous habiller des artistes ? Lesquels ? Des actrices surtout. Des femmes qui ont une forte présence hors de la mode et du temps, des actrices dont l'intégrité dépasse l'écran. Parmi elles, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Ludivine Sagnier, Aurore Clément, Charlotte Rampling, Emmanuelle Seigner. J'apprécie également Anna Thompson et Julianne Moore. Quel est selon vous le meilleur look de l'histoire de la musique ? Le pire ? Le pire est indubitablement Harry Connick Jr., incarnant à mes yeux le conservatisme américain. Le meilleur est pour moi celui de Morrissey. Un jean, une chemise et l'attitude pour les porter. Pensez-vous qu'il existe des rock-stars dans la mode ? Les vraies stars de la mode ne sont pas des rock-stars. C'est une attitude que l'on ne devrait pas trouver chez les créateurs de mode. Nous nous adressons à un public plus restreint qu'une vraie rock-star, aussi nous ne devrions pas chercher à atteindre le même degré d'adulation. Certes, la mode est faite pour être portée, mais il est vrai qu'elle ne s'adresse pas forcément à tout le monde. Des gens comme Rei Kawakubo par exemple sont les vraies stars de la mode, et elle est pourtant tout sauf une rock-star. Vivienne Westwood est peut-être l'exception. Ce n'est toutefois pas elle qu'elle met en avant, mais son travail. Les créateurs qui travaillent plus sur leur image que sur leur collection disparaissent souvent prématurément. Développer sa marque, son style et son histoire doit absorber à mon avis toute cette énergie. Vous avez associé des artistes plasticiens à votre travail, pourquoi? J'ai besoin de recul sur mon travail. En collaborant avec un artiste, je l'utilise un peu comme un miroir afin de voir mon travail sous un autre angle. J'ai besoin d'ouvertures sur l'extérieur... Les voyages y contribuent aussi. Pourriez-vous envisager une collaboration avec des artistes sonores, musiciens, chorégraphes...? Oui. J'aimerai travailler avec un chorégraphe, ce que j'ai déjà fait dans le passé. Je reste attaché au travail de Carolyn Carlson et de Lucinda Childs notamment. McQueen a mis en scène un ballet pour sa dernière collection, Viktor & Rolf ont présenté un cabaret, Gaspard Yurkievich un show au Crazy Horse... Sommes-nous revenus au défilés-spectacles des années 60 ? Je ne pense pas vraiment que les années 60 étaient celles des défilés-spectacles. Chacun peut faire ce qu'il veut, mais cela ne concerne que très peu de gens dans la mode. Il s'agit surtout d'une question de moyens financiers: plus on en a, plus on le montre ou on peut le montrer. Je préfère une présentation plus intimiste, où l'on peut mettre en scène son travail dans une atmosphère particulière. Selon vous, comment se dessine l'avenir de la création de mode? Et le vôtre ? Les choses se font lentement et il faut prendre le temps de créer avec cohérence, afin de construire sa propre vision, pas à pas.
